    ExperienceBackcountry Skiing and Snowboarding

    Truckee Tahoe Backcountry

The backcountry provides the ultimate escape in the wild. Its draw derives from the sense of freedom one will inevitably experience when they adventure into such terrain. The work it takes to plan, climb, and arrive home safely provides a paramount canvas to paint unforgettable memories.

The Truckee/Tahoe area hosts endless backcountry access, from Sugar Bowl and Squaw Valley side-country tours, touring in the famed Mt. Rose wilderness, or climbing the high peaks on the west shore of Lake Tahoe. No matter where you decide, the high sierra offers endless 1,500 plus foot descents, untouched lines, and memories.

Traveling in these areas without the proper gear and knowledge is not recommended. Please ensure you have training, a plan, knowhow over the area and snow conditions, and skills in the backcountry before you go out. Sugar Bowl also allows travelers to enter the backcountry from their boundaries through specific backcountry gates.

Alpenglow Expeditions provides guided tours out of Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows and can arrange more terrain. For those who need training over equipment, backcountry travel, and avalanche safety, we recommend NASTC (North American Ski training & Climbing school), offering several avalanche and backcountry travel courses. NASTC offers Avalanche Training course here at Cedar House Sport Hotel.

    BACKCOUNTRY GUIDE COMPANIES WE RECOMMEND

NASTC(North American Ski Training & Climbing School)

NASTC offers world-class winter courses for those wishing to learn or hone their skills in the backcountry. Classes range from winter tours around the Donner Summit area, where participants learn how to use needed backcountry gear, route finding, and basic snow safety; to full-scale multi-day avalanche courses. Though NASTC provides a learning environment, skiing and snowboarding ability for participants must be advanced. The terrain explored is laden with steep bowls, tree glades, couloirs, and technical traverses. All in the winter wonderland of the high sierra.

NASTC offers several Avalanche training courses held here at Cedar House Sport Hotel. Please consult their website for dates.
